BMR Group
✕Established in 1991 in Andhra Pradesh, India, BMR Group pioneered the introduction of whiteleg shrimp cultivation to India as a solution to the loss of local shrimp species. Founder Dr. B.M. Masthan Rao has since been honored for his success in introducing the more resilient and easily cultivated L. vannamei to the local aquaculture community. The company exports their own products and their BAP 3-Star certified shrimp can be found throughout the world under their brands: BMR Classic and BMR Gold.
BRM Group operates 11 hatcheries across two villages — producing three billion eggs per year. They have exclusive licenses certified by CAA (Coastal Aquaculture Authority) and MPEDA (Marine Products Export Development Authority) to import high-quality, healthy shrimp stock from around the world to produce disease-free eggs. Their facilities nurture the hatchery stock using their own high-protein feed with no added antibiotics. The company has also established strict bio-security and water testing measures to ensure no product contamination — all the while adhering to the Global Aquaculture Alliance BAP guidelines.
The BMR Charitable Trust oversees all charitable and philanthropic activities under the BMR Group, including betterment of education, health, women empowerment, and the environment in Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu. Their farm to fork program allows for total traceability of their products. The company’s contract farming initiative successfully incorporates the local community in helping grow and harvest eggs. BMR Group has won multiple awards for sustainability, including Best Hatchery in India 2014, and is certified by multiple food safety and sustainability organizations such as BRC (British Retail Consortium), BAP, ISO, and HACCP.
